International Permaculture Design
Certification Course
with Edouard van Diem,
John Laizer and Laura Maier January 8th-19th 2018
at the Practical Permaculture Institute, Zanzibar
We are excited to announce the first international Permaculture Design Course (PDC) at the Practical Permaculture Institute Zanzibar (PPIZ) in collaboration with tropical Permaculture expert and Permakultur Campus (Germany) founder Edouard van Diem, PPI-Z head teacher and farm manager John Laizer, and Global Change Management (M.Sc.) graduate Laura Maier. Besides the standard 72h curriculum with focus on tropical Permaculture, this course will feature a number of special guests and excursions, such as a visit to the large scale urban Permaculture project Fumba Town Development with Franko Göhse and Bernadette Kirsch (FTSC), a lecture by expert on natural medicines Said the Herbalist, a field trip to inspiring local initiatives of Zanzibar’s east coast exploring stingless Beekeeping, mushroom farming, superadobe earthbag building, and sponge farming/reef restoration – all included in the fees!
About the PDC
The 72h Permaculture Design Course (PDC) is the classic of permaculture courses, originally developed by permaculture founder Bill Mollison. PDCs are offered worldwide and are the prerequisite for the Permaculture Design Diploma in many countries. Nevertheless, the PDC in its own is a good basis to start adding some Permaculture thinking into your own personal work and projects.
Permaculture offers many simple and practical solutions that can deliver locally applied answers to global questions. The lifestyle of individual people has an impact on the global climate. Likewise, the „interpersonal climate” between individuals and the designed microclimate on your site are objects of permaculture design. Permaculture’s prime goal is to create future viability and enabling people to take their lives into their own hands.
The course is targeted at people who want to deal specifically with the design possibilities of Permaculture. These can be individuals interested to integrate Permaculture thinking into their own projects and work, but also professionals from the fields of urban planning, medicine, and development aid. The participants deepen their knowledge about the history, ethics, philosophy and goals of Permaculture. The systemic approach of the Permaculture design process extends beyond the field of home and garden, and also involves the community and economic aspects. Therefore, the participants study the principles and the steps of the Permaculture design process (pattern / language) and explore the application fields of garden, agriculture and self-sufficiency, as well as architecture, construction, infrastructure and questions of work and employment. The theoretical input is complemented as far as possible by practical applications.
PDC content
The aim of the course is to deliver the broad field of Permaculture through the internationally recognized 72-hour design course curriculum according to Bill Mollison and to provide a solid foundation for further endeavors using Permaculture.
During the course, we will focus on the following topics:

– Permaculture principles and methods
– Observation and perception
– Design exercises and presentations
– Ecosystems, system theory and complexity
– Soils, trees, water, climate
– Permaculture in the tropics
– Urban Permaculture and indigenous landscape design
– Social Permaculture
– Natural patterns
– Architecture
– Terrain modeling
– Self-sufficiency
– Economy and community
Design exercises as well as the intensive study of concrete projects in group work and student presentations will put the theory into practice. Thus, the theory acquired in the course is directly applied by practical transformations on the emerging project of the PPIZ, a growing farm with a lot of already existing plants and structures.
The teachers
Edouard van Diem has been on the Permaculture journey for 12 years, starting his own Permaculture education center, the Permakultur Campus in Hamburg, Germany, four years ago. The Permakultur Campus offers Permaculture related workshops and courses, and also the certification of the Permaculture Diploma, a 1-2 year training in Permaculture design. Edouard has also been very active in working with projects abroad and giving consultation to businesses and NGOs in Haiti, Palestine, and the DR Congo. www.permakultur-campus.de
John Laizer has done his PDC and Permaculture Teacher’s training through PRI Kenya. He has been working as the head farm manager for the Permaculture project ‘Food Water Shelter’ in Arusha, Tanzania, for ten years. Originally from the Masai land, John has had a deep connection and bonding to earth and nature since his childhood. He is specialized in tropical vegetable farming and natural pesticide making. John has been the prime teacher and farm manager for PPIZ since September 2016. We are very happy to have him! www.permaculture-eastafrica.com
Laura Maier joined the Permaculture family in 2012 while living on Jamaica. She consequently wrote both her Bachelor and Master thesis on Permaculture (B.A. “Peace-sustaining and sustainable Lifestyles: Permaculture and Rastafari” and M.Sc. “Enhancing ecosystem services for urban resilience – A case study of Permaculture as an adaptive management approach at Fumba Town, Zanzibar”). After spending a year researching Permaculture in East and South Africa, she decided to settle on Zanzibar, working with Franko Göhse for the Fumba Town Service Center for one year, and after that moving on to take over the role of operations management at the Practical Permaculture Institute, Zanzibar.

The venue – PPIZ
You will be accommodated in the school dormitory building within the beautiful gardens of the Practical Permaculture Institute, 15min from the historical city of Stone Town. Accommodation is simple but traditional, with rooms shared amongst two people each and communal shower and compost toilets. Fees include full board of a tropical breakfast, and Zanzibari spice cuisine for lunch and dinner each day, starting with dinner on arrival night January 7th 2018 and ending with lunch on graduation day, January 19th 2018. Please let us know about any dietary preferences/restrictions in advance!
We kindly ask all participants for personal use to bring organic/natural shower gel/shampoo in order to keep our grey water systems chemical free. We kindly request all on-organic trash to be taken back home, so please reconsider all items you want to bring along. Ladies, please consider getting a Menstrual Cup as alternative to one time use Pads/Tampons, if you are not on that track already 🙂

Arrival Details
Participants are expected to arrive the day prior the course start, on January 7th (dinner included) to register themselves and settle in. Please tell us your arrival details in advance, so we can organize the included airport/ferry transfer. The course ends after the graduation on Friday afternoon, January 19th. Last included meal will be the graduation lunch that day. Additional meals and nights at PPIZ post/prior the PDC can be arranged for an additional fee.
